Children of the Cyborg, shawl collared cocoon maxi dress coat by Weijing Xiao, in Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum permanent collection, Getaria, Spain.

Weijing Xiao (Parsons School of Design) is a transdisciplinary designer and entrepreneur with a focus in post-human theories and fabrication research. They speculate on nature-machine-inspired objects in both physically and digitally in spaces including but not limited to creative technologies, fashion, theatre, sound, moving images and visual arts. They experiment with visceral hybrid materiality to investigate the relationship between body, technology, politics and gender. Recently, their cyborgian couture garment was exhibited in Cristóbal Balenciaga Museoa, Spain and was subsequently acquired to be in the museum’s permanent collection. Their CFDA-debuted collection MOTHER evolved into a fashion designer role commissioned by artist Yo-Yo Lin for her multimedia performance at one of the largest and most prominent art venues in New York, the Shed. Weijing’s collaborative live audio-visual installation Mírala was selected to present as the opening performance of Parsons Benefit at Pier 17. Most recently, their quantum practitioner team exhibited in Microscope Gallery, New York, as the winner of the Most Creative Use of Quantum Technology in Visual Arts, awarded by IBM Qiskit.

Over the years, they have gained various industry experiences in companies such as Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Dion Lee, Adam Lippes and Harper’s Bazaar. They were selected as finalist for 2021 CFDA Design Scholarship Award, CFDA x Swarovski Re: Generation Scholarship Award, CFDA x Coach Dream It Real Scholarship Award.
